New and Returning Entries Ranked

1. Greenlight

Did this song break physics? It has both Pitbull and Flo Rida on it and manages to not be boring. Granted neither of them are the highlight of the song. That would be the production and LunchMoney Lewis' chorus. The production is bass-heavy and funky, complete with some actual guitar presence. Though a little more would've been nice. Plus I just love LML. Glad to finally see him on something good after being wasted on Thomas Rhett and Meghan Meghans.

2. Perfect Illusion

It's back. Undoubtedly not for long though. Sigh. Album boosts are a tease. This really does deserve to be bigger. Even if I think it isn't perfect. Production could've used more guitar. But other than that, good stuff. It's intense and Gaga's performance is great.

3. Say It

Still pretty good. Glad to see it back. It still amazes me how Tove Lo was able to make the best of a weird producer. Great swell. Great vocals. I only really don't like the overproduced percussion in the chorus and parts of the synth solo.

4. A-YO

Lady Gaga takes on country. It's actually pretty good. It's stupid, but I dig it. It's got style, and it manages to fit Gaga's vocals better than expected. I can see how this would lose people though. Could be a little irritating. Guess you can call it a guilty pleasure for now.

5. Love On The Brain

Random time for this to come back. Apparently it's a single now. But released back in September. Okay. Still, not gonna complain. Not quite my favorite from Anti, but I do appreciate its retro swing style. It's relaxing and feels authentic. Though I don't really have many expectations for it moving forward.

6. Million Reasons

Okay the lyrics don't bother me anymore. The song's supposed to be about her struggling thoughts after all. Right? Still, it's a sweet song. Downtempo and somber. It works for what it is. But unfortunately it'll just fall out again next week. The vicious cycle.

7. Hallelujah

This is the third version of this song I've heard on the Hot 100 in recent memory. And, well, Lindsay Sterling still has the best version. Still, this song does translate to acapella well. There's some percussion in the last verses. Is that allowed in acapella? Still, great harmonizations. I dig it. Also this is part of a Christmas album. And yet people eagerly flocked to it in October. Okay.

8. Shout Out To My Ex

I like this. A little. It's not the best. The verses are a bit annoying, but still passable. Some of the production quirks seem a bit strange and keep it from being great. The chorus is great though. That's where it really shines. It's a fun kiss-off song.

9. Fake Love

I've heard people say this is one of the better Drake songs to come out this year. And yet I've found it hard to care. I tried listening to this song and turned it off halfway. Not because it's awful but because it's just so boring. Drake's clearly trying to recreate Hotline Bling again, but I just don't care about his cries of people showing him "fake love". Plus the production's kinda thin. Maybe this'll grow on me, but for now I just want Drake to take a break. For God's sake.

10. Sneakin'

Is Drake painting himself as the bad guy on this song? That's the impression I get from the lyrics. On one hand, self-awareness. On the other, douchiness. The beat sounds like Back To Back's if it was mostly percussion. So it doesn't hit as hard as it should. It's weird to hear 21 Savage actually rapping with some energy. Not bad, but mostly I'm just bored.

11. What They Want

Is there suddenly a market for Ty Dolla $ign copycats? Actually he also reminds me a bit of Sean Paul with that Jamaican style flow. Bleh. He's not awful I guess but I've heard better in this vein. This beat is so dead and barren. Basic synthline, tropical-esque percussion. Not a lot to latch onto.

12. Say You Won't Let Go

THIS IS A WHITE GUY WITH ACOUSTIC GUITAR SONG!!!!! Bleh. Could be worse I guess. James Arthur does not have a good voice. He sounds like part of his mouth is numb at all times. Also it's supposed to feel emotional, but I dunno. I feel nothing. Don't see this sticking with me like other ballads.

13. No Heart

Awwww, you think you're ready to take off without Future now. Cute. That's cute. There is nothing to this song. Seriously, what can you get from this guy that you can't get from other mumble rappers? 21 Savage sounds more bored than Sage The Gemini. Metro Boomin's production is generic and sleep-inducing. Why are these guys getting so much buzz?

  1. I still like Shout Out To My Ex, but am I the only person who thinks the chorus sounds really similar to the chorus from Ugly Heart by G.R.L, which was released in 2014?
