Billboard Hot 100 Highlights June 9th, 2018

I'm a couple days late and I'm sorry. Personal life stuff got in the way and general apathy also got in the way. But it's here now. Also worth noting is that, at least for the time being, I'm not gonna be giving a ranking section for these posts. If you're curious for my take on a song, ask me on Twitter, but with how I mostly consume music in my car these days, it's hard for me to come up with 3-4 sentences for songs that I won't remember exist in a few days. Sorry. But I do have an idea of what to replace them with. Anyway, highlights.

General Thoughts

The big story this week was obviously the Pusha T album bomb. After listening to all the debuts, I listened to Pusha's album in full (since it's 22 minutes), and I was pretty impressed. Especially with The Games We Play, for its weedy guitar line with biting flexing about being a drug lord. What Would Meek Do? ends up being the weakest of the charting songs, as Kanye brings his Twitter crazy in his verse, including an interpolation of his infamous Lift Yourself verse. If You Know You Know has an awesome beat but isn't quite as hard hitting as The Games We Play. Then of course you have Infared, where T takes shots at Lil Wayne and Drake, mostly for using a ghostwriter. The beat wasn't great, but it was pretty entertaining regardless. And that makes it hilarious going to Drake's I'm Upset, even though it's not a response to Infared, because of how pathetic it is and how it pales in comparison to everything else he's released this year. And thankfully, it looks like it'll be flopping.

Shawn Mendes and A$AP Rocky managed to regain some traction with their respective album releases. I'm glad to see Youth back, as it's the best song off Shawn's self-titled album. As for A$AP, eh. Could take or leave A$AP Forever. Praise The Lord was pretty fun though with those insane flute leads. Though I haven't heard many good things about Testing, so that's probably where my exposure to the album ends.

I enjoyed High Hopes for the typical Panic! tropes, though wished it was a little more bombastic. Girls Like You was kinda okay. The guitar lead is decent and Cardi's verse is pretty good, but they don't fit together very well. I Was Jake (You Were Diane) is a fine enough bro country hookup song. Jake Owen does them the best and that's fact. Lovely was downright gorgeous and soothing, and provided me with another reason to like Khalid. Taste's beat sucks and I feel alone in thinking that. Plus Tyga rapping about being sucked like Hi-C gives me serious Stimulated flashbacks. Dinero is a mess, but what else can you expect from J-Lo these days? Big Bank is alright, but a step down from Still Brazy. Probably because YG decided to team back up with DJ Mustard when he didn't need to. And Tati...do I need to dignify that 6ix9ne is back?

Best: The Games We Play
Honorable Mentions: Infared, Lovely

Worst: Tati
Dishonorable Mentions: Dinero, I'm Upset
