General Notes

Country must've had a turbulent week, possibly due to some shifts in country radio. I'm not happy Take Back Home Girl is back, but I found myself digging FGL's Simple more than I thought I would. It's got more character and charm than usual and it actually sounded half like a country song for once. However, I'd argue Luke Combs was the big winner for country this week, as his decent song Beautiful Crazy made a return, and brought with it the lower charting Must've Never Met You. Which I would argue is the guy's best song since Hurricane by a mile. It's a cathartic post breakup track that makes it clear that Luke doesn't see how he can get over his current situation. Which can be insufferable, yes, but it's a believable thought process to go through and he plays it well. Definitely a highlight of the week.

2005 came back in a big way with Weezer and Gorillaz charting their first songs in several years each. Weezer came with a cover of Toto's Africa that I think is better than it has any right to be. It gets the instrumental arrangement down pretty well and the crunch of the guitars on the chorus that the original lacks is actually a nice touch. Again, better than it had any right to be. Meanwhile, Gorillaz's Humility was also pretty fun. It feels like a comeback of the styles of Plastic Beach, easily the band's best album, and is smart and engaging the whole way through. Which is something I couldn't say for many of the songs on Humanz. Not bad for a comeback at all.

In miscellaneous news, Welcome To The Party came back for some reason. Though it's heartily welcomed. We got more Latin with Sin Pijama, which is actually pretty solid. Natti Natasha plays off Becky G better than she did Ozuna on Criminal, and the beat is sexy as hell. Definitely one of the better Latin crossover songs in recent memory and I hope it sticks. And finally, 5SOS's Youngblood is not that bad. Not great either, thanks to the chorus feeling kinda flat and the production being a little wonky. But some elements of a kickass song are still here, and I don't mind this for the time being. It's certainly better than Want U Back, their previous offering.

But of course, the big story this week is the album bomb of Kanye's 7 track record, Ye. I have mixed feelings of this album overall. I like the things some of the tracks were trying to say, but it often lacked the production to feel great. The opening track I Thought About Killing You is painfully pretentious with its repeated message of "I think about killing myself and I love myself more than you." When it eventually turns into an actual song in the last third it feels too bumpy and fragmented for my liking. Yikes kicks it up, though, with an eerie beat that sounds straight out of Yeezus. It's unbelievably catchy, and I'm glad it was the best performing song on the album. Even despite the weird outro about Kanye's bipolar. All Mine hightails it back into insufferable with that awful falsetto chorus and ugly, blubbery beat. It just doesn't work at all. Wouldn't Leave is pretty somber, and I guess appropriate for being about Kim Kardashian. It's kinda pleasant, though nothing mindblowing. No Mistakes feels anchored by that "Believe it or not" sample that almost sounds out of place. But with the opulent swell of the beat and choir singing on the chorus, I don't mind it too much. Part of this gospel influence goes into Ghost Town, which I appreciated. Though with PARTYNEXTDOOR going off-key on the chorus and the outro of 070 Shake going on for way too long, it could've been better. Violent Crimes has a sweet sentiment about Kanye not wanting his daughter to be sexualized when she gets older, but the beat is too dull to really do anything for me. Again, could've been better. Ye as a whole gets a solid 5/10 from me.

Best: Must've Never Met You
Honorable Mentions: Humility, Africa, Sin Pijama, Yikes

Worst: All Mine
Dishonorable Mentions: I Thought About Killing You, Violent Crimes
