General Notes

Arguably the most prominent force on the Hot 100 this week was X. His death lead to a posthumous chart bomb bigger than any other I've seen. With the possible exception of Prince. He got back 7 songs from both 17 and ?, and I didn't listen to a single one for this week. I feel like I didn't need to. In addition to that, Hope from ? charted for the first time. It's a lousy, annoying, misguided tribute to the victims of the Parkland shooting. Also it's weird that it charted 4 months after that event. Still, heard this was one of the worst songs off ?. They were right.

The second biggest story of the week is Beyoncé and Jay-Z's collab album. It's pretty mediocre, especially following Lemonade and 4:44, both of which were incredible albums. Thankfully not every song from Everything Is Love charted on the Hot 100, and most of the songs that did chart were the better ones. I only disliked two of the songs. Friends is dreary and lifeless, Nice is scattershot and annoying as hell. On the flip side, Summer is smooth and very enjoyable, especially for the summer season. Boss isn't perfect, but the beat is very entertaining and classy. But as far as I'm concerned, Apeshit is the real star of the show on this album. Incredible beat, catchy ad libs from Migos, Beyoncé doing her ratchet shtick about as well as she can, and a Jay-Z verse that's a little off but mostly sticks the landing. I hope this one sticks around a bit longer.

We got an eclectic mix of electronic music this week. Oceans uses Khalid's melancholic crooning pretty effectively and is really pleasant to listen to. Though I much prefer Silence. Born To Be Yours is a decent love song, with Kygo being able to match Dan Reynolds' voice very nicely. I've heard some people say Dan's performance wasn't great, but I disagree. His raspy high notes make the song more interesting and are mixed really well. DDU-DU DDU-DU is a song I'm conflicted on. I feel like I should find it more annoying than I do, but also feel like I can't jam to it as much as I want to. It's overall decent, and was not as bad as I was expecting. Though I don't know if the market on Korean pop in America is gonna be nice to BLACKPINK over time. Especially with how quickly BTS songs tank over here.

Hip hop also gave us a few different tracks. Cops Shot The Kid was the only entry from Nas' new album, and thankfully it's the best one. Intense beat, biting social commentary, and Kanye doesn't totally embarrass himself. If there was one song that had to chart from this album, I'm glad it's this one. Bigger > You is okay at best. Quavo's hook isn't great, the beat is kinda stock, and the verses from 2 Chainz and Drake don't inspire much either. It isn't terrible, it's just kinda there. Bed on the other hand is the rebound Nicki Minaj really needed for her album coming up soon. The beat is gorgeous and Ariana's hook is fantastic. At least until she belts toward the end. I don't know if that really worked that well. Though Nicki herself relies a bit too much on rhyming words with themselves in her verses. Nothing new for her, but still disappointing. Still love the song overall though.

In miscellaneous news, Medicine just barely came back, and probably won't last that long. Though I heard Queen Naija has a new song that's dominating iTunes right now. This has shrunk on me since I last heard it. It's too catty and bitchy for my liking. And finally, Drowns The Whiskey is a decent country song about misery. It sounds really good, at the very least. But I am frustrated that Miranda Lambert is relegated to backing vocals. This song really could've used a verse from her. Would've made for more effective melodrama instead of just putting the spotlight on Jason Aldean.

Best: Apeshit
Honorable Mentions: Cops Shot The Kid, Bed, Born To Be Yours

Worst: Hope
Dishonorable Mentions: Nice, Friends
