New Entries

1. Written In The Sand

Jeez, Old Dominion are really cleaning up their act, aren't they? Here they try their hand at a downtempo ballad about a breakup that's actually pretty well thought-out. The narrator wonders if they'll even be remembered properly, or promptly forgotten about. And it sounds great to boot. It sounds a little poppy, but still organic enough to sound natural. Probably their best song to date.

2. Awful Things

I didn't hear about Lil Peep until his death. Still felt really bummed about it, considering how young the guy was. Even still, I was prepared to hate this. But I like it quite a bit. I was expecting trap rap from this, but it's more like emo rock. And it's pretty good emo rock at that. Peep has a demanding vocal presence and the beat is intense. A little messy, but it fits with the presentation. It's haunting and over-the-top, but it was still a nice surprise. I should hate this, but even if I did...the guy just died. So I wouldn't want to be too hard on it anyway.

3. Echame La Culpa

"Blame me." This is currently taking the Latin world by storm and I'm just hearing it now. Luis Fonsi and Demi Lovato have a surprising amount of chemistry together. They sound like they're having a lot of fun. The beat sounds great, with the typical Latin percussion pattern not being as obnoxious as it can be. It sounds like a party, which more Latin music should be like. Brighter than Despacito, and able to have its own identity because of that. I dig it.

4. Glorious

Well, this returning was a surprise. I did hear Mack was gonna perform this live on some show but I didn't think that happened yet. Ah well. Still good. Probably won't get much higher though.

5. Home

Uh...weird combination of artists. I think this is MGK trying to be more like Eminem, but with no real detail. Why do you wanna go home? I dunno. Sam Harris' chorus is weak lyrically, but I guess I can dig Kelly's delivery on this. He's there aesthetically, even if he isn't all the way there. Also I was confused as to why Bebe Rexha was there until the bridge, because she also partially does the chorus. I don't know what this is about and I feel like I should hate it more than I do, but it does somethings right. So it get somewhat of a pass.

6. Faking It

My least favorite song on Funk Wav Bounces Vol. 1. Yay. Not to say it's a bad song, but this song's groove feels much stiffer than most of the rest of the album, due to the drums on the second half of the verses and chorus. The bass is also kinda sour. It still manages to be alright to listen to, but not an essential listen. Kehlani's performance is pretty good, but Yachty feels too random and doesn't have good chemistry with her. That pepperoni line is just...mystifying too. Apparently it actually happened but that doesn't make it make more sense.

7. When We

...fuff. Wasn't looking forward to this charting, mostly because it's this slow, Zayn-esque song with no real groove. Tank's performance is technically good, but is also pretty boring to me. This isn't so sexy as it is just dull and kinda creepy. The way Tank says the title then drops an f bomb a second later is the only memorable part about this. And the fact that it goes on for 5 minutes does not help. But it's hard to get mad at this due to how forgettable it is. I don't anticipate this sticking around, or at the very least I hope not.

8. No Smoke

Just like the last YoungBoy song that charted, this has been bubbling for an eternity. And man is it weird, and not in a good way. The beat has no clear music pattern, mostly relying on percussion, and the chorus doesn't really match it anymore. The flow there in particular is off. YoungBoy does show some dexterity in his flow in the second flow, so there's something here. But most of it is just...weird.

9. End Game

Seeing the features on this song was enough for me to do a double take when I first saw it. On some level I guess it makes sense that Taylor would wanna work with Future on this album, but why also Ed Sheeran? I guess Ed has said he's a Future fan. But he sticks out like a sore thumb against this industrial mess. Also probably the best part of the song. The rest is sludgy, especially Future's verse and the cheerleader section. That's what I'm calling the "big reputation" part. Overall, this song is just sexless and kinda pointless. And yet it's still not as bad as I thought it would be.

10. Beautiful Trauma

I was optimistic after Revenge that Pink would have some gems on her new album. If she does, this isn't one of them. This feels like two songs awkwardly slammed together. Or at the very least a song that was written as a low-key ballad performed as a synthpop song. And it's not good. It's jarring, the writing is generic, and ugh it's ugly. Also, I think Channing Tatum is the one who's gonna have trauma after this video, not you Pink.

11. The Rest Of Our Life

This is...encapsulated madness. I think. At the very least it's more confusing and jarring than it should be. And I think that has to do with Tim McGraw's performance. He sounds like he's singing outside of his comfort zone, and it's too overdramatic for a song about growing old together. The production is also overblown and not balanced well. I don't even know what else is wrong with this, but there must be a lot. How is this so uncomfortable to listen to?

  1. Yeah, why doesn't P!nk just release Revenge as a single? Apart from it being great quality-wise, it's already doing than Beautiful Trauma here in the UK, despite being an album cut. Though I still like BT, even if the post-chorus is kind of weird.
