Welcome to another late edition of Highlights, where it's the last week of the Billboard year and I need to finish a script tonight too. But still, I do this because it's the part of Tuesday I enjoy the most. Enough rambling. Taylor. Highlights.

New and Returning Entries Ranked
1. Broken Halos
Oh wow, it's been some time since this was charting. But it's back because of the CMAs. I remember this song being more minimal, but I might've been mixing it up with Either Way. Ah well, this is really good. The instrumentation is sweet and somber, the backing vocals are fantastic, and Chris Stapleton remains a charismatic, amazing performer. Glad to see this back.
2. Pray
Back because of the album and I couldn't be happier. This song has only grown on me and has entered regular rotation for me on Spotify. First Sam Smith song I've done this with. I also discovered that Timbaland helped produce this. And I definitely hear it now, with those little synth loops. Great song, one of my favorites of the year.
3. Pull Up N Wreck
This was by far the best Metro Boomin track this week. It has the most fully realized beat, with an almost opulent sound at points, especially during 21 Savage's verse. Big Sean brings his A-game in terms of bars and delivery, and 21 Savage surprisingly isn't bad either. Again, he tends to try a little harder when he's a guest artist.
4. Lemon
I uh...uh...I am not sure how to react to this song. I thought it was really annoying in the beginning, but when it shifted to Rihanna's verse, I started to dig it. Despite the weird beat with the "wait a minute" vocal sample in the background. It's also good to finally hear Pharrell rap again. It's a fun weird song that I think I should find annoying.
5. Nightmare
The beat for this is pretty basic, but it does have an appropriate amount of spookiness for the title. I'm surprised 21 Savage wasn't on this one, but I'm glad he wasn't. He would've brought it down. The focal point is, of course, invoking Freddy Krueger. Which, yeah, that's effective. Solid track.
6. Wait
Wait'll you see my...oh sorry. Wrong song. Yeah, this is much better than Ying Yang Twins. I'm not particularly interested in Maroon 5's new album, but yeah, this is fine. Not groundbreaking, but it sounds cool. Even if the guitars are kinda choppy. It's almost disco-influenced, and the pitch-shifted vocals are cool too. This is just...cool. Would I like the rest of Red Pill Blues if I liked this?
7. Mad Stalkers
I dig this beat. It's eerily creepy, and it bumps. Offset's verse is a lot of fun too, as is the case with a lot of songs on this album. But, say it with me now, 21 SAVAGE SHOULDN'T HAVE THE HOOK. Probably no explanation needed there. Though on his verse he's able to hold his own a bit. When he's not slowed down. More evidence that 21 Savage didn't need to be on this project.
8. Call It What You Want
So far this is the best song from Reputation I've heard. I appreciate that it pivots back to the cleaner synthpop style that I liked about 1989. But it still feels a bit sleepier than it should. The chorus isn't as exciting as it should be. But whatever, it's probably supposed to be more about the lyrics. Which aren't as dumb as Gorgeous', but are still kinda pretentious in an unattractive way. Not entirely on board with this to be honest. I'm glad there's not much likelihood of a Reputation album bomb next week due to most of the tracks being album only on iTunes.
9. Rubbin Off The Paint
Is that a SpongeBob sample? This is pretty much a dime-a-dozen WORLDSTARHIPHOP freestyle/whatever. Average beat with the bass popping too much. I guess the lyrics aren't bad, but aside from an out-of-left-field Rick and Morty reference, it's your standard "I'm about that thug life" stuff. Not terrible, just not particularly interesting.
