Billboard Hot 100 Highlights October 28th, 2017

Back in the season of charity singles? Guess it makes sense, since the hurricanes just won't stop. I am glad someone is trying to help Puerto Rico. Though we'll talk about the single's quality later. For now, we also have to deal with the fact that we gave Post Malone a number 1 hit. Highlights.

New Entries Ranked

1. Dear Hate

A country ballad to help with the Las Vegas Shooting. And it's beautiful to boot. The guitars are smooth, Morris and Gill sound great, and it's got a good message. Kinda in the same vein as Eric Church's Kill A Word. Very nice song, but given it's a charity single, it probably won't stick around.

2. Pray

Sam Smith does a song that reminds me a lot of Take Me To Church. On the surface sounds like something I'd really hate, but I dig this. Mostly because the religion aspect of the lyrics feels carefully handled. They come naturally, and add to Sam's need to pray, despite his lack of religious background. Also, the performance and instrumentation are very soulful and emotional, and I can feel a connection. As a result, this is easily my favorite solo Sam Smith song to date. Wish this could be doing better than Too Good At Goodbyes.

3. How Long

Attention was not a fluke. Charlie Puth continues to bring the funk with some crisp guitars and bass, and his vocal performance is on point once more. If I had one complaint, it would be that it feels a bit too similar to Attention. The structure is almost exactly the same. As such, it's not hard to see that this song doesn't have quite the same bite as that one. But, I don't know. Even people who didn't like Attention seem to like this one. Though I can definitely see why. After all, I like it quite a bit too.

4. Almost Like Praying

It's a charity single for Puerto Rico. Didn't know what to expect, but in hindsight, a song that's primarily in Spanish makes sense. Artists I recognized included Fat Joe, Jennifer Jopez, Camila Cabello, and Luis Fonsi. Obviously I can't really judge the lyrical content as I don't know Spanish, but this is still tight and energetic, with a quick, somber chorus to tie in with the charity aspect. Pretty good song. Puerto Rico needs all the help it can get.

5. Lights Down Low

What this reminds me most of is Slow Hands by Niall Horan. Mostly because it's an acoustic sex song. Not a perfect comparison but it makes sense to me. Anyway, I don't mind this. MAX has a decent voice that carries his verse and chorus, and especially that explosive bridge. gnash on the other hand gives a pretty shaky performance and I'm not sure he really adds anything. Overall though, not bad.

6. Too Hotty

This song caught my attention by crediting all three members of Migos separately. But as Goog pointed out, crediting them as Migos does not guarantee they all get a verse. Anyway, this is a confusing one, mostly for the beat. Its main instruments are the chanting vocals you can barely hear in the background. Migos do their usual thing and I just don't really care. They do fine, I guess. I wouldn't call this a bad song, but it's pretty forgettable.

7. Heaven

Oh come on, Kane Brown. To be fair, this is the most country song Kane Brown has charted this year, but the sleepy verses do nothing for me, and neither does the chorus. Saying that there's no way Heaven could be better than being in bed with a woman. Which I'm sure sounded romantic in his head, but uh...I don't think it quite lands. Instrumentally it sounds kinda cluttered too. Better than What Ifs, but that's not saying much.
