Billboard Hot 100 Highlights January 7th, 2017

Well, it finally happened. The Weeknd got his third number 1. Not quite as good as Can't Feel My Face in my book but...I'll just let you finish that sentence. Also we got a lot of Christmas music, a lot of which had somehow never hit the Hot 100 before. Weird, but it'll all be gone next week. HIGHLIGHTS TIME!

New and Returning Entries Ranked

1. Versace On The Floor

No doubt back because of the huge fallout from last week. I dunno if it'll stick around, but if Bruno's smart, he will push this as the album's second single. Still sensual and beautiful. I really want this to stick around.

2. OTW

Short for On The Way. You could've just called it that you know. Anyway, you might remember this guy for Might Be earlier in the year. This is kinda humorous. Rushing to get to a girl he finds sexually attractive. Decent production with those guitars too. Kinda bumps. It may not be high art, but compared to all the other rap hitting the charts this week, I'll definitely take it.

3. Last Christmas

George Michael just died on the 25th, so I wasn't expecting any Wham! songs to chart just yet. But, Christmas music knows no bounds. The sentiment is sweet, and the production is delightfully 80s. Classic. Though I'm more familiar with the Ariana Grande version that plays at my work during Christmas. Think it works better more subtle like this.

4. Make Me (Cry)

I don't care, I still like this. It's experimental and weird but it works. Even Noah Cyrus' pitchy voice isn't really that annoying. Decent stuff.

5. It's The Most Wonderful Time Of Year

You would think this would've hit the 100 at some point in the last...50 years? I don't know how old this song is. I don't mind this one, mostly for how upbeat and cheery it is. It's a Christmas classic that actually feels like Christmas. Plus it hasn't aged as badly as some other songs.

6. Feliz Navidad

This song always stuck out to me among all the other Christmas songs, despite having by far the most repetitive lyrics. Spanish Christmas. It's Christmas in another language! If that doesn't scream novelty, I don't know what does. This is a Christmas song I don't mind hearing.

7. Both

Okay, I ended up liking this a little more than I was expecting. Mostly from the beat and Drake's hook. Gucci himself does me no favors, and I guess Drake's bars aren't particularly impressive either, but eh. He comes out looking better here. Nothing amazing, but I'll take it.

8. Mary, Did You Know?

Apparently this was released a couple years ago. More explicitly about Christmas than Pentatonix's other charting song right now. More about the Christian aspect with Jesus' birth. It's a decent arrangement, but I'm starting to hate Pentatonix as a band for how smug they seem. Is that weird?

9. The Christmas Song (Merry Christmas To You)

I somehow didn't hear this song this year. Not that it matters; this will be gone next week. It's a classic, I guess. Christmas music. Kinda boring if I'm honest, but pleasant.

10. Holly Jolly Christmas

You know what Christmas song I wanna see chart? Let's Have A Patrick Swayze Christmas. Not this, this is kinda hokey and dated. But I've heard worse.

11. Party

Surprise, it's garbage! The production is cheap and thin; it does not sound fun at all. When you make a party song that can be described like this, you have failed. No one gives a standout performance, though Usher comes closest, I guess. I have to pray this will flop.

12. Swang

So, I avoided the bonus tracks from Sremmlife 2, but I guess it couldn't last. Dear god this is dead. The beat reminds me of UOENO, which is a bad sign. It just plods along with this ugly, toneless setting. Jxmmy claims he could be a doctor at one point, which is not even remotely believable. This song is pointless.

13. Red Opps

A 21 Savage song from 2015 charting for whatever reason. It's kinda comforting to know he always sucked. Then again, why the hell is this guy still charting?

At work one version I would hear a fair bit aside from the original was the Taylor Swift version. xP

    1. Yeah, admittedly I'm not familiar with Wham!'s work. Next week I expect that to change a little bit though. RIP George.
