New and Returning Entries Ranked

1. False Alarm

Wow. I think I might like this more than Starboy. This song has more of a rock edge, what with the heavy guitars and synths. Not to mention the reverb on The Weeknd's voice. This is just intense and exciting through and through, with enough quirks to make it feel fresh. Hell yeah. Now I'm definitely looking forward to this album.

2. You Don't Own Me

Confused it's back. I kinda thought it was past its peak/prime on the charts. This is just gonna disappear in a couple weeks (if not sooner) unless it gets crazy gains. Still, it's always fun when this comes back. I'll take it.

3. Say It

We trade one Flume song on the charts for one that is significantly better. I almost wouldn't have known this was by the same guy as Never Be Like You if it weren't for the overproduced percussion on the chorus. Other than that, the beat actually backs Tove Lo great. That guitar/synth solo isn't great though. Some minor production nitpicks keep this from being a great song, but as it is, it's pretty good.

4. Fresh Eyes

Decent song that's probably gonna be flogged to death like every other Andy Grammer song that's charted. It's got a nice guitar lick and the lyrics are kinda charming. However I do wish there was a little more to it. The chorus feels like a buildup to something more explosive but that never happens. As it is, though, it's decent. Not a lot of replay value though.

5. Lifted

So...this is a thing. Tropical style production with some hip hop influences. The second half of the first verse is kinda insufferable, but thankfully it picks up from there. It manages to stay catchy and fun. Pretty weird though. Also I kinda expected this song to be in Korean, since CL is a Korean pop star.

6. All We Know

Alright at this point I'm kinda experiencing Chainsmokers burnout. I'm sure I'm not the only one either. But this isn't even a bad song. It's just kinda there. The melody isn't that interesting but it is sonically pleasing. Phoebe Ryan's voice is pretty weak though. It probably wouldn't stick out if Andrew Taggart wasn't harmonizing her. I could maybe see this growing on me, but as of now, it's only kinda decent. Let the overexposure begin...

7. Wanna Be That Song

It's a country love ballad. About wanting to be a song. I feel like country referencing other songs for their own songs is becoming more and more commonplace. And maybe it is. This isn't bad, it's just not very interesting. Played out. Ain't gonna remember this. Maybe I should stop expecting Brett Eldredge to ever make something as good as Lose My Mind again. Bleh.

8. Cranes In The Sky

This song feels incomplete. The individual elements sound fine and all, but together they're just kinda there. The song drags for a bit and I may have zoned out for a bit. Don't think I missed anything other than repetition of the chorus. On a technical level it's fine and all. Solange has some nice vocals. But it's not really engaging.

9. Don't Touch My Hair

This really isn't all that interesting. The R&B instrumentation feels desaturated and limp, aside from that bass and horns. Lyrically it feels flat. Just bragging about hair? Okay. The chorus has something with the the harmonizations. But overall Solange just sounds like a less interesting Beyoncé. Lot of nitpicks make this kind of a dull listen.

10. All Eyez

This song makes me feel disgusted. It's produced by Scott Storch for one. Though this isn't that bad for him. It's more Jeremih and The Game themselves that sink this. Jeremih in particular sounds bad, The Game has some gross/instantly dated lines like that dog filter thing. His flow feels scattershot too. And the whole thing feels really messy as a result. I really could've done without this in my life.

11. Juju On That Beat (TZ Anthem)

So apparently this song has great sales on iTunes. Joy. This is still really bad. Please stop making these stupid, irritating dance rap songs popular.

  1. I'm not totally on board with False Alarm yet, but it might get better with me in more listens.

As for All We Know, don't worry, it's dropping pretty quickly on iTunes and only has okay streaming at best. It's gonna drop next week and more than likely fall into the category of "debuts with momentum and then just sinks" club with Rise, Make Me (although that one had that big gain after the VMAs and album) and Perfect Illusion. Same deal with This Town.
