New Entries Ranked

1. King's Dead

Total banger. The beat's mostly percussion but it makes the most of it with some clicking and what sounds like a baseball bat cracking. Jay Rock's verse is sweet, Kendrick's got an energetic chorus, and Future's fine...up until he sings in his falsetto. But when the beat switches up and Kendrick just yanks the mic...ho man, that's awesome. I don't understand why this needed James Blake though; he contributes less than Jay-Z on Pop Style.

2. My My My!

I always kinda forget about this guy whenever he falls off the charts. But I do like this quite a bit. Gorgeous synths, a smooth intensity, and Troye giving a slick, charismatic performance.

3. Keke

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAGH I like this. I like a 6ix9ine song. The beat is actually good. A more complex, energetic melody than your usual fare with this guy. And it bumps. Of course 6ix9ine himself is miserable on this, but when Fetty Wap and Boogie go for their verses, it ain't bad. I'd say just skip to Fetty's verse and you can listen to this guilt free.

4. IDGAF

I have previously heard this song since I listened to Dua Lipa's self titled in a car ride to an interview last summer. And it's alright. It's another ruthless takedown of a man in Dua's past, though here it's harder to believe that she's truly over him. But regardless, it's pretty catchy, though a little basic. Don't mind it. It's okay, but New Rules did everything this song does and did it much better.

5. The Champion

Seeing the name Carrie Underwood paired with Ludacris certainly got my attention. Though to be fair, Luda has worked with country artists in the past, like on Jason Aldean's Dirt Road Anthem. Then again, this isn't a country song. It's more of a rock pump-up song, with clichéd writing and a generic progression that makes it hard to truly get pumped to. It's style over substance. I think it gets where it wants to be a little bit with Luda's verse, but even then, I think he could've been swapped out for a guitar solo and more would've been achieved. I wouldn't call this bad, but I would call it strangely derivative. And with a team-up this odd, I shouldn't be saying that.

6. El Baño

"The bathroom." Ew. There's just something off about this song. And I can't even tell what it is. Maybe it's the production quality or the strangeness of the melodies. It's kinda driving me mad. It's surprisingly distinct from other recent Latin hits, but I can't tell at present if that's a good thing or not. This might require repeat listens.

7. Tequila

Can we talk about these lyrics? How tequila is the only thing that reminds this guy of his ex? Not even other things like music or other girls remind him of her for some reason and it's really weird. Plus the whole song is really saccharine sounding and kinda boring due to overproduction. And the chorus just kinda devolves into country stereotypes. Can't really get into this.

8. Outside Today

You know it's a bad sign when the video is barely over two minutes long but still has a skit at the beginning with no music. Anyway, this is the guy's worst song. At least on his other songs his voice was passible but it's grating here. Plus there's a three-note synth melody that just drags and offers nothing new or interesting. Much like this song. How is this his highest charting song to date?
