New and Returning Entries Ranked

1. For You (Fifty Shades Freed)

Whoops I like this. If you ask me this doesn't really fit the Fifty Shades series but I'll support an upbeat synthpop duet. Though most of the reason this song works is the production. Neither Rita nor Liam give particularly interesting performances, but they're passable, I guess. This is probably something that won't stick with me, but it's much, much better than the drab I Don't Wanna Live Forever.

2. All The Stars

For the Black Panther soundtrack. And yet I put it below a Fifty Shades song. That feels weird. But this is still pretty good. Synths sound nice, it's well composed, SZA sounds great. Though I wish there was a little more interplay with her and Kendrick instead of just giving him one verse early on. But that's just wishful thinking on my part.

3. Beautiful Trauma

I think this is clicking with me a little better this time around. I still have production issues, but they don't bother me that much this time around.

4. Nowadays

The better of the Lil Skies songs this week, if only because it sounds a little more energetic. Landon Cube's post chorus is actually kinda nice, but Skies himself just sounds disinterested in what's going on around him. Can see the appeal, but it's not for me. Also the "I'm too cold for a girlfriend" line is kinda cringey.

5. Filthy

I don't usually say this about music, but this isn't a song. I don't know what this. This registers more as...well, the buildup to some stage performance, like the music video portrays. Justin himself sounds okay but the robotic sounds going on around him are maddening, and I'm not sure what he's even going for. Makes me wish he had stuck to what he was doing with the electric guitars at the beginning of the song. That would've been a much more interesting song. I wouldn't even say I hate this song, but wow it's a mess and I hope it flops.

6. I Miss You

Oh I wasn't looking forward to this. Mostly for Julia Michaels. I'm normally down for Clean Bandit, but it's clear they had to break their backs to make a song around Michaels' godawful voice. The production is cluttered, especially on the hook, where it feels like there's no consistent melody and the instruments just exist to create some sort of backing for Michaels' unstructured cadence.

7. Red Roses

So uh...this is really boring. Which I kinda expected. I get it's supposed to be vibe music with the low key synths and cranked up reverb. But the content isn't interesting, and it's just so repetitive, since it uses the same flow for nearly the entire song. You listen to 10 seconds, you've listened to the whole song. Which is probably why Landon Cube is on the song to be more intense. I don't really like his part either since it reeks of fake woke emo attitude, but at least he's trying.

  1. i don't see filthy being a hit, if it had better production it would be topping for sure

  2. Yeah, I don't think Filthy will be anything like his past work, I could see it taking a similar path that LWYMMD took. Huge first week at first, only to be so polarizing it flops, with only radio clinging onto it for a bout another week or two.

  3. Next week, all three of the big three of 2017 are gonna drop out at the same time because of the 52 week rule, unless Shape Of You doesn't fall too hard.
