New and Returning Entries Ranked
1. River
Out of the songs I've heard from Revival, this is far and above my favorite. I'm still a little stunned Eminem decided to collab with Ed Sheeran rather than tear him apart, but they work together beautifully. His chorus is great, and I assume he contributed to the creepy, Yelawolf-like guitars. All the while Em tells a story about infidelity and abortion that shows that the old Em might still be in there somewhere. This will probably fall hard next week and will miss the year end, but I really wouldn't mind this sticking around. Great song.
2. Tennessee Rain
Well this exceeded my expectations. Usually with these Voice songs you usually get something pretty forgettable. And while I wouldn't call this incredibly memorable, I think it does a lot of stuff right. Addison Agen sounds nice, the instruments are organic and sweeping. It's very pretty, and well-put together. Probably won't remember this, but it's better than you would otherwise expect.
3. Walk On Water
So...I feel like the rest of Revival has made this song weaker. Since the lyrics are about Em's struggle to remain relevant and his struggle to meet his own expectations, and the album that followed it is bad, it kinda makes you wonder what he was talking about here. Sigh...it's still an enjoyable song on its own merits, but yeah, that hurts. Also there's a music video now that'll probably give it a couple more weeks on the charts. My only complaint with it is that there's no Beyoncé and also no visuals to match the paper scrunching sound effects in the song, so it's offputting when those happen.
4. Home
So that Bright movie is out and is apparently not very good. Neither is this song either but that's not gonna stop me from kinda liking it. I'm weak, I'm sorry.
5. Jingle Bell Rock
I'm sure that opening riff sounded cool to me at one point but now it just sounds so hokey. But this is from 1957 so it happens. Was surprised it took so long to rechart this year. Also holy crap this song is now 60 years old.
6. Feliz Navidad
God this song is so dumb. But eh. Also, OMG A LATIN SONG THAT USES DIFFERENT PERCUSSION I am so sorry.
7. Wish I Didn't Love You
I can see the appeal behind a slow piano ballad like this about conflicted thoughts about a relationship. And there's something to this. But Chloe Kohanski belts with a raspy voice pretty much the entire time. It's really not a good fit. This might fit with a more delicate, airy performance, but this is a mismatch. Encapsulated madness, if you will.
8. I Pray
So I guess one of the contestants on The Voice this season was a Christian country singer. Good for him. Though this song doesn't really do much for me. It's about as generic a Christian country song as you could write. Non-complex lyrics about how God is there, blandly saccharine sound, eh. I don't hate this but there's nothing it really offers.
9. Believe
So, was the awkward outro of Walk On Water supposed to lead into this? Because that wasn't a satisfying payoff. It's confusing to hear Eminem default into a generic trap beat with the minor pianos and a reverb nightmare of a chorus. It just doesn't suit him, especially with such stilted flows and the fake anger that he's adopted in his delivery throughout 2017. It takes away the impact of some admittedly clever lines. He does start to sound more genuine during the first part of the third verse, but then he kinda loses his grip again.
10. Ice Tray
This is actually billed as a Quality Control song, and that label is becoming more and more ironic. This beat is as stock as they come and the bass is ugly. Quavo's delivery is higher than it usually is while Yachty's is lower. It's really awkward. But I'm not even gonna remember this song by tomorrow, so whatever. Also the phrase "Ice tray the gang" makes no sense, and yet they repeat it with such conviction.
11. The Race
This recharted because of a remix with 21 Savage and Young Nudy. And you just couldn't let it die, could you? And I think the remix made the beat sound even cheaper for some reason. Ugh. Luckily I think this is unlikely to stick around, but come on. 21, I don't even like you, but you're better than this.
i wish cloraseptic debuted,it was my favorite song production-wise

ReplyDeleteit will be the biggest dropout ever.
mariah carey a record setter
Actually AIWFCIY will definitely last one more week, since next week will include tracking data from Christmas itself. Also the biggest dropout is from Purple Rain by Prince when it reached number 4 last year after Prince's death.
