New and Returning Entries Ranked

1. Last Christmas

I guess this is gonna join the legion of Christmas songs that rechart for the Holidays. I'm fine with that. Rather hear this one than the Ariana Grande cover that adds gang vocals and trap percussion that work plays. The Taylor Swift cover's fine, though. Still, there's something joyfully dated about the original. Christmas heartbreak in an 80s movie. Or something. RIP George.

2. Pull Up N Wreck

Beat still bangs, but I noticed this time around that Big Sean is just slightly off the beat. Ouch. Doesn't exactly say good things about you when 21 is more impressive than you in flow and staying on beat. Ah well.

3. Untouchable

I was really looking forward to Eminem's Revival until I found out it was pretty bad. You broke my heart Marshall. Though I haven't heard the whole album at this point, I feel like this would probably be one of the better tracks on that album. It's a political commentary on white privilege and racism, with some decent lines. The beat has its moments too, but ultimately feels pretty cluttered. The samples peak too much, and Eminem's yelling on the chorus is a little uncomfortable, but for aesthetic reasons rather than lyrical reasons. His flows throughout feel a little stilted too, which seems to be a running theme with the album too. Around halfway through it also turns into a different song, with a less aggressive beat. This isn't bad, but it feels pretty inconsistent. And I don't see it sticking around. River seems prime to replace it next week, and I'm okay with that.

4. Legends

Still doesn't really do anything for me. Maybe because of how mechanical it sounds, especially at the beginning. I seem to forget that part every time I listen to this.

5. Never Be The Same

The beat on this kinda reminds me of Flume, in the sense that the percussion downs out the melody and the instruments feel squeaky. It's a pretty mushy and kind of uncomfortable beat. Camila's performance isn't great either. She sings high notes I don't think I've heard her attempt, which is weird. They aren't as piercing as they could be thanks to being cooing rather than belting, but still. This is messy and weird. But, oddly enough, refreshing this week.

6. No Smoke

I feel like we could've safely forgotten about this. But apparently I have to be reminded it exists again. Bland, generic flexing track that I have no use for. Not even that bad, just derivative and lame.

7. Danger

You ever just look at a feature list for a song and get really, really sad? Probably. This is another song from that Bright movie Home is from, and it works about as well as you would think. Migos actually come out as the highlights on here as they do their best to ride this beat that doesn't fit them. And Marshmello trying to integrate trap into his style is kinda painful. It's so cluttered, putting together two styles about as badly as possible. Pass.

8. Go Legend

I'm not a fan of how Travis Scott dominates this song with a repetitive, heavily autotuned hook. Or with Metro Boomin providing another heavy sample beat that misuses dark, moody production. It just doesn't sound good when it all comes together. Then we have Big Sean with the corny references to Mario and Rick & Morty. Now there's two songs on the Hot 100 that reference that show. Mostly though this is just dull, and not at all fun. Man, that Big Sean/Metro Boomin album must not be very good.

9. My Dawg

I can't believe there is a literal baby charting. Immediately this guy comes off as a poor man's Young Thug. They sound nearly identical, though Baby has far less personality and probably less versatility too. The beat is stock and plucky, like your average rap meme crossover thing. No idea what the appeal is here, and I'm unlikely to remember it anyway.

10. Dark Knight Dummo

This is like, the exact same melody as F**k Love. Come on man. Now that we got that out of the way, Trippie Redd. Affiliations with XXXTENTACION and 6ix9ine, neither of which is promising. And he's about as obnoxious as I thought he would be. Fuzzy, nearly unlistenable beat with odd, out of place organ. Redd being obnoxious as hell. I've never looked forward to a Travis Scott feature than I have right now. With a beat this bombastic, I'd rather have him over XXXTENTACION's buddy.

  1. So you think that Eminem is in running for worst comeback of 2017, huh? I think you forgot Katy Perry, haha.

    1. Well, also consider that I expected/wanted Revival to be good, and I didn’t expect Witness would be very good. This hurt me more.
