New and Returning Entries Ranked

1. Perfect

Released as a single just today, with a lyric video out a few days ago. But there must've been some hyper earlier since it's already charting again. I'm alright with that. I forgot how lovestruck and pleasant this was. Definitely a step up from "Thinking Out Loud" in both writing and production. Love that 6/8 time, the violins, and the Ed's cadence. Not quite my favorite from "Divide", but a good one nonetheless.

2. Homemade Dynamite (Remix)

I listened to "Melodrama" a long time ago and remember very little about it. I do remember liking this song quite a bit. It was originally a solo song, but all three guest performers do add a lot. From Khalid's moodiness to Post's party attitude and SZA's sensuality. It all comes together surprisingly nicely. Never knew I wanted this combination of artists together but I dig it. The beat's nice too, if a bit wonky at times.

3. Too Much To Ask

A Niall piano song. Yeah, I dig it. Primarily a breakup anthem, and it's decently written for that. Though the f-bomb feels a bit out of place. But I like the idea of wanting his ex to surprise him to dance with him, perhaps one last time. Though it's a bit weighed down by the title line, "Is it too much to ask?" I'm sure it's meant to be asked in earnest, but it does make this feel a bit dickish. Not enough to weigh down the song, of course, but still an issue I have with this. Still, looking forward to "Flicker".

4. Rockstar

I mean...it's not rock, and I feel like a song about being a rockstar should have some semblance of guitars. Even "Black Beatles" did that. But despite that, I actually like this a bit. The beat's spacey and cool, with lyrics that are more about the self destructive aspects of being a "rockstar". Glorifying it, but still. Post's cadence is nice for this, and even 21 Savage is tolerable here with a melodic flow and a decent punchline about garages. It's still pretty self-indulgent and stupid, and I shouldn't like this that much, but whatever. Might not mind if this hits number 1, especially with what's currently there.

5. DNA

So apparently BTS are a very popular South Korean boyband. All fine in good, I guess. This is fine. It's upbeat and catchy, and the members seem to have their own distinct identities/roles in the band. So that's nice. Though I don't really have much to say about this. It seems a little typical for k-pop. It doesn't feel like another "Gangnam Style" or anything like that. Or maybe it does feel that way to someone and I just don't see it. Ah well. Good song regardless.

6. Curve

This is...okay. Which is better than I was expecting, even with The Weeknd on board. The beat's minimalist and a bit too on the nose with the tension, but is otherwise kinda catchy. Though The Weeknd dominates too much of the song. It's not even three minutes, and Gucci only has one verse. But that one verse isn't too bad, surprisingly enough. Yeah, this is alright. Might be at the bottom of this ranking but I don't hate this at all.

  1. I swear, rockstar samples the piano from Amnesia: The Dark Descent, every time I remember Mark and PewDiePie playing it back in the day, that piano sticks out a lot, just like in this song.
