New and Returning Entries Ranked

1. Friends

This song kills. Justin Bieber might be one of the most over-saturated pop stars right now, but damn I love this. The dance-pop beat and Bieber's smooth delivery make it awesome. Admittedly pretty close-sounding to Sorry, but a little more fleshed out. More bass, bigger drop, and less dickish lyrics. Though I wouldn't call it incredibly memorable. Though maybe I just need to hear it more.

2. Questions

Oops I like this. Quite a bit, actually. Chris is more tasteful than he's been in his recent singles and it has a nice groove. Even if the bass is a bit overproduced. Regardless, it's pleasant and funky. Actually more like dancehall, but I don't have a problem with that. Plus, it's short. Really short, barely 2 minutes. So you don't have to feel guilty about shoving Chris Brown into your ear for too long.

3. Havana

Well if one of the solo Camila songs had to come back this week, at least it was better one. That's kinda harsh, I do like this song and would be okay with this being a hit. It's groovy.

4. Know No Better

This may be clicking with me? The beat's pretty sweet and Travis Scott and Camila sound alright with it. Quavo still doesn't. Though I still find the song kinda forgettable. Ah well.

5. Younger Now

Well, this is actually an improvement over Malibu. The production feels tighter and Miley's giving a better performance than on Malibu, and I feel the lyrics work a little better too, with the theme of change. Though the instrumentation is kinda drowned out by the overproduced percussion. Like Imagine Dragons but without the same power and energy. Still, aside from that, this does hit an indie rock sweet spot for me, and I can appreciate that.

6. Relationship

Kinda assumed this would just go nowhere. I think this shrunk on me, mostly for the atonal beat and Future's contributions. This song is weird. And it isn't country. Contrary to what people might say.

7. Look What You Made Me Do

Debuted with only three days of radio. Holy crap, Taylor Swift owns the world right now. Plus this'll shoot straight up to number 1 next week. Still, its early debut is impressive. Wish I could say the same about the song. Taylor's writing herself as the bad guy intentionally for once, with mixed results. The beat's a bit more dour than I would like, and the chorus is messy and unpleasant. But the pre-chorus and bridge are untouchable. Overall...better get used to it. It's only been out for five days and it already feels like it's everywhere.

8. Transportin'

I feel nothing listening to this. I guess the beat's okay, anchored by a nice descending guitar line. Kodak himself though is even more unintelligible than usual and isn't even able to annoy me here. It's just kinda empty space. Kinda feels like an aimless freestyle. Boring.

9. I Get The Bag

Pretty sure this could just be credited as a Migos track with a Gucci Mane feature. Takeoff gets a verse and Quavo does the chorus twice before Gucci even says anything. And when Gucci does say stuff..."two b***hes so fine that I masturbated." Ok, wow... Beat is the same desaturated bass-heavy beat that leaves no impression and leaves me bored. Just because Slippery left this week doesn't mean we need a replacement.

10. Its Every Night Sis

This is my first time watching a RiceGum video, and I didn't like it. Like, at all. As a diss track/response to It's Everyday Bro, it's astonishingly weak. Most of it is flexing, which I don't like hearing from mainstream rappers. And there's really only two points: no one knows Jake Paul's Disney show (which he's not on anymore anyway), and he's a bully. Even though RiceGum is called that as well. Also the punchlines are really cringey and the beat is nothing special.

11. Roll in Peace

What the hell is this sampling? Some 50s film music? This is grating. And Kodak is Kodaking everywhere, meaning he's annoying the crap out of me. And we get the unwelcome charting return of XXXTENTACION, complete with him copying Kodak's flow. And he sounds like crap doing it. And the whole thing drags and is just miserable to listen to. It makes me wonder what the point of this is.

  1. I'm sorry, the old Taylor can't come to the phone right now.

    Why? Well…

    Because she's dead.

    2. Damn it! Was about to comment that line. Well played, Scott.

  2. I was scared that LWYMMD was gonna be your worst of the week, because of the more dark, and edgy production. I thought you'd say "It sounds like something from the soundtrack of a horror movie" like you said about The Hills.

    1. Eh. It's honestly way more toned back than The Hills. Plus there are elements of the production and melodies that worked for me, which spared it from worst of the week. I still don't like it as a whole, but I don't completely hate it either.

    2. Ironic really. The moment I first heard this song, I thought it was decent, the pre-chorus was infectious, but the drop and the chorus ruined it for me. Now I just straight up love this song. Kind of like The Hills, except backwards.

    3. XXXTENTACION is so underrated,he has a lot of bangers and a lot of very lyrical songs that are so difficult to find because they are lost on the internet. But his verse in roll in peace was shit
