New and Returning Entries Ranked

1. First Time

Ellie Goulding is a much better vocalist than Selena Gomez it's not even funny. This isn't that much different from It Ain't Me, but I'd argue it's much better due to being more soothing and again, Ellie being a much better singer. It may not be something I return to a lot, but it did leave a good impression on me. I like Ellie and would like to see this stick around.

2. Human

Don't care, this song is still awesome. Great bass, great vocals, great swell. It works for me.

3. You Look Good

Glad to see this back. Blues rock country good.

4. Slow Hands

Glad to see Niall's planning on using more instruments than just acoustic guitar as a solo artist. This one gives me more of an indie rock vibe, which is a plus in my book. It's slow and methodical, with a good thudding bass and electric guitar lick. Not quite as good as This Town, but it's promising for Niall moving forward.

5. Thunder

I assume my friends hate this song because of the pitch shifted vocals? But I like them. Although I would expect a song called Thunder to be more powerful, I'll take this. It's catchy yet thudding and anthemic. Wish it did have more guitar and organic bass though. Not their best anthem, but one I can get behind.

6. I'm The One

The big one. First number 1 for both Chance The Rapper and DJ Khaled. That's the power of Justin Bieber now I guess. And, eh, it's alright. It's catchy, Quavo and Wayne have decent verses. Chance has the weakest verse unfortunately. Production sounds like a better version of Don't Mind from last year, though the pitch shifted voices can be a little annoying at times. Yes I know I said I liked them in Thunder, but those sounded better and didn't play through the entire song. Overall, yeah, I'm fine with this song doing this well right out the gate.

7. Sweet Creature

Following up Sign of the Times with an acoustic folk song eh? At least he's actually making new music shortly after his debut, unlike Niall and Louis. This unfortunately isn't as good as Sign of the Times but I still like this. It's sweet and earnest, Harry's performance is good. Don't think it's quite good as This Town as far as folk songs by former One Direction members go though.

8. You're Welcome

This is back because of the memes, right? Because I believe this song has been especially memetic lately.

9. 1-800-273-8255

OKAY, eggshells time. This song created a lot of controversy in my circle for the way it handled the topic of suicide. And yes, it's way too broad and simplified to do what it wants to do regarding the topic. However, I do not believe this song is dangerous. The song itself doesn't carry a bad message, and its only real fault is how quick it takes for the protagonist to change his mind about taking his own life. But there are much, much worse ways to portray suicide. Besides, the production and vocals from Logic and especially Alessia Cara are pleasant. I hesitate to call this a bad song, but I do admit it could be better. WHO CAN RELATE?

10. Flatliner

I think I enjoyed this a little more this time around. Guitars are sweet. Lyrics are still not good, though.

11. El Amante

It's time to stop.

12. Magnolia

This is just ugly. The same ugly attitude that makes me hate Lil Uzi Vert but with somehow even less personality. Ugly synths, ugly voice. This song is just ugly and generic.

13. Privacy

Why does Chris Brown keep insisting on making ballads where everything, including the beat, sounds drunk? It's a terrible way to set the mood. It just makes me feel like I would rather be doing anything else. But, at least it doesn't have a rape line like Back To Sleep. Doesn't make it not atrocious, though.

14. Woke Up Like This

Because the world really needed a second Lil Uzi Vert. Content is not worth mentioning like you would expect, except that it jacks lines from Dem Franchize Boyz of all people. The beat's also thin, comprised of a repetitive guitar loop that's pushed back too far in the mix and doesn't have the grit it should. Waste of time.

15. Bon Appétit

And the award for worst collab of 2017 goes to... I listened to this song when it first released last week and I wish I hadn't. This is all kinds of atrocious. The worst song I've heard from Katy Perry since This Is How We Do. Katy just shouldn't do dark songs. The production's wonky, the lyrics are uncomfortable in their sex-food metaphors. Migos' parts aren't worth mentioning, since even with all three of them, they're barely there. But their influence is still all over this track. At least it's likely to flop hard.
