New and Returning Entries Ranked

1. Castle On The Hill

This song feels like a sweeping adventure. What with the guitar tremolos and bright chorus. I do wish the drums were louder, but it works for me regardless. And Ed Sheeran brings his typical level of charm, somewhat overwritten lyricism. But it works for me. Looking forward to ÷.

2. Shape Of You

I was originally going to wait for this to chart before I listened to it. But I caved. I've had plenty of time to meditate it. And I've decided I like it quite a bit. Yes, it's a naked attempt to copy the dancehall trends of the last year, but it's done well. The beat is interesting and reminds me of "Tapedeck" by Silversun Pickups. The chorus line actually makes sense in describing a relationship going sexual quickly. Plus it's catchy as hell. I accept our new Ed Sheeran overlord.

3. Today

Glad to see this back. Still appreciate the sentiment of the chorus in particular. Nice country production. I've been hearing this at work lately and I never minded it. We'll see where it goes.

4. Location

It's decent. The instrumentation's off kilter with those Labrinth-esque guitars and clapping percussion, but it works. With lyrics focusing on wanting a serious relationship with healthy communication, I can get behind that. Kinda sweet. Not amazing, but I will definitely take it.

5. What They Want

I'm still not exactly impressed by this. It wants to be a boast of independence in the rap game but it can't really back that image up. Beat's not too impressive either. Not bad, just lukewarm.

6. If The Boot Fits

Wow, this is cringey. Some sort of country fairy tale thing? Yeah, Adam The Bean is laughing at you right now. Not to mention I've always found the phrase "if the _____ fits" cringey. At least the instrumentation is passable.

7. Call On Me

Oh god, why is this back? That drop is still weedy and a buzzkill, and there's an odd lack of passion given the lyrics. At least when EDM songs have this problem they have stronger instrumentation to back them up.

8. Drinkin' Too Much

The only remotely country elements of this song are those faint acoustic guitars on the chorus. That's it. The rest is moody R&B that isn't flattering. It's bitter and not really relatable. Feels more passive aggressive than it is genuinely somber. Not a fan.
