New and Returning Entries Ranked

1. Paris

I've been looking forward to this. Easily the best thing these guys have released since Don't Let Me Down. The lyrics and instrumentation connect here better than on Closer. Especially those guitars on the post-chorus. Taggart also proves he can carry most of a song by himself this time around. I'll never understand why people thought his vocals on Closer are bad. Emily Warren's backing vocals are a nice touch though. I can see myself revisiting this frequently.

2. Say It

I'm actually pretty surprised I'm the only person I know of who included Never Be Like You on their worst list. Ah well. Opinions are opinions. If this song were to become a hit in the States, I would not object. Of course it already blew it twice before so it's kinda unlikely. But we'll see.

3. Black

Not sure I would call this country. Still, there's something to the subtle drums and guitar touches. It definitely got my attention. Also kind of a weird way to describe a relationship. Making his world go black. I'm not sure I get the metaphor, but it's not unsalvageable. All in all, digging this. It'll be interesting to see if this gets much traction.

4. Down

I...find this weird. It's mostly a piano and vocal song, but then this compressed vocal bit comes out of nowhere on the chorus accompanied by some trap high hats. Not saying it's bad, it's just weird. Not to mention Marian Hill herself sounds disconnected from what she's saying. Still...it's alright. It's interesting in its minimalism, I'll certainly give it that.

5. Despacito

Maybe I'd have more of a concrete opinion on this if I could understand the lyrics. Latin music sounds very samey to me. Even with modern pop influences like here. This does sound alright, Luis Fonsi included. Daddy Yankee however is kind of a mood killer, though. He doesn't really belong here.

6. My S**t

Eh, just stay off. You had your chance.

7. Not Nice

I see Drakehall still has the potential to chart even in 2017. Even when it's just a protégé of Drake. This kinda feels like an attempt to recreate One Dance but it's not doing anything for me. The instrumentation's more sparse and the drum patterns are mixed kinda badly. I know that was the case in One Dance too but I didn't mind there because it was catchy there. Also, dickish lyrics. Fun.

8. T-Shirt

17-5 same color t-shirt? What does that mean? ... Cocaine. Everything is cocaine-related to these guys. Wiry strings with typical trap drums. This does absolutely nothing for me. Forgettable bars. Please, we don't need another Migos hit any time soon. We're good.

9. Not Afraid Anymore

Another Fifty Shades Darker soundtrack song. It's not good. After Closer dropped, I thought we were all overreacting about Halsey. But, nah we were right. This song goes for bombast but comes out as empty. There's too much going on and yet there's nothing to latch onto. I don't even mind Halsey's vocals, it's just the production and instrumentation is so bad here. Almost like a retread of Katy Perry's Rise.
