General Notes
Country. Cry Pretty and Downtown's Dead returned because country somehow had a turbulent week. Cry Pretty's okay, Downtown's Dead isn't. New country includes Hotel Key with Old Dominion returning to their uncomfortable sleaze to dull results, Sunrise Sunburn Sunset being the first Luke Bryan single I've actively disliked in a while, and Kiss Somebody being alright. Morgan Evans has some charisma and I hope he has better stuff in him.
R&B/pop. We got back Don't Go Breaking My Heart, which is a plus. Also not exactly R&B but Me Neigo is back again which is nice. As for new songs, I love Growing Pains quite a bit. Has some minor shortcomings, but is overall cathartic and sounds incredible. Hope Alessia's new album is good. As for Karma, not a fan. Everyone who's talked about it loves it, but it reminds me of the same stuff I dislike about SZA. Overly moody trap that actively annoys me and is probably my least favorite of the non-Drake arrivals.
Speaking of Drake...fucking hell. I've listened to Scorpion twice now. It's terrible. I don't remember a huge chunk of it. But let's try to break it down. I like Nonstop for being a lowkey banger. Mob Ties is energetic and a little menacing, complete with a Young Thug impression. I can dig 8 Out Of 10. And Sandra's Rose is okay from what I can remember. Some tracks that stood out as particularly bad...Finesse is a song that never wants to get going and Drake's bitchiness is insufferable. Is There More has one of the worst beats on the album and is incredibly scattershot. Peak also had a bad beat. That's How You Feel is more defined by the Nicki Minaj sample than by literally anything else. Can't Take A Joke is utterly embarrassing and Drake comes off as insecure. Final Fantasy is wasted potential, as it does not sample anything from the video game series of the same name (You'll sample DKC2 and Sonic 06 but not One Winged Angel?). March 14 is formless and forgettable. After Dark is okay at best, but I'm confused by which parts are the late Static Major. Jaded is forgettable. Talk Up is menacing but joyless, and Jay-Z's reference to X's death is strange, to say the least. Blue Tint has Future and is boring. Ratchet Happy Birthday is only noteworthy for that brrrrr bit that reminds me a lot of Post Malone. I don't remember Summer Games but I don't think I had much of a problem with it. Same with Elevate and Survival. Don't Matter To Me is depressing in both sound and how it drags the late Michael Jackson further. Emotionless is a slog, only really defined by the Mariah Carey sample. In My Feelings is Nice For What-lite with a terrible breakdown. And that's expected to go to number 1 next week, much to my chagrin.
This week sucked.
Best: Growing Pains
Honorable Mentions: Mob Ties, Nonstop
Worst: Finesse
Dishonorable Mentions: Don't Matter To Me, Can't Take A Joke, Is There More, Karma, Final Fantasy
