New and Returning Entries Ranked

1. Powerglide

I've listened to this song several times since it first debuted. I was worried that it wouldn't chart due to its low YouTube. But it made it, and I couldn't be happier. The beat is fantastic. It's a simplistic yet epic horn pattern that's hype as hell. Swae Lee is melodic and fun, even when he slips into his falsetto. Slim Jxmmi brings intensity to his verse. Even Juicy J is actually on the top of his game here, with a quick tribute to Lil Peep and an admission that he should probably cut back on his drug usage. What rapper says that? But yeah, this is incredible. Even better than Black Beatles. I would love for this to do well, because it deserves it.

2. Satvia

This was a pleasant surprise. Swae Lee doing the hook on what's essentially a vibe track. Relaxing at the club with weed or something. Yeah, it's pretty good. Swae Lee sounds great, and Jhene Aiko herself is incredibly smooth. I especially love later on in the song where she and Swae trade off lines of the song. The beat's also relaxing and trippy as it should be. And surprisingly, when Slim Jxmmy drops his verse, it surprisingly fits. Mostly because he dials it back for once. So yeah, really enjoyable song. Hope it does well.

3. No Excuses

Well I'll be damned. I had heard this was actually good, and...that wasn't wrong. I don't know what happened. The instrumentation's colorful, fun, and got some nice tinges of funk, especially in the bass. Not the best in its lane, but it's serviceable and it fits Meghan's voice well. And she's not insufferable! I don't know how she did it, especially since she's telling off a guy. But yeah, this ain't bad. Far from it. Let's see if she can keep it up. Especially since I kinda assumed her career was dead.

4. I Lived It

Looks like Blake Shelton's got a bit of a good streak going here. Like I'll Name The Dogs, it's not amazing. In fact it's pretty basic. But it sounds pleasant enough. The writing is appropriately sentimental. Nothing super heartwarming, but at least it feels important to Blake. And really, that's what matters most. In fact, Blake kinda implies that you might not see the same things you do, and that's okay. Eh.

5. The Champion

One more week, huh? And it's thanks to a music video that uses mostly found footage of triumph or something. Most interesting thing is when a #MeToo sign comes up. That's...that's worth empowering. Yeah.

6. Tempo

Obviously you can't switch up the tempo, Chris, because you don't do that at any point in the song. This is just gross. The main instrument is supposedly that curling synth thing you can barely hear. It's too drowned out by the bass to leave an impact. And when you can hear it, it's kinda grating. I have no idea what this beat is trying to go for, but it's ugly. Kinda like whenever Chris tries to do a sex song. What a confusing mess.

7. Top Off

Well that beat is annoying. It's the equivalent of beeping bells. And having Future on it doesn't help, especially with him in his upper range where he sounds terrible. Jay-Z does his best at the very least, with some shoutout to Meek Mill. Should he be freed? I don't know. But then the first bit of Beyoncé's verse barely has any beat around it and it's weird. Puts on a weird cadence too before defaulting into deva mode. Overall, just...ugh. I thought the success of I'm The One and Wild Thoughts would make DJ Khaled want to get more creative.

8. Everyday

I don't get what the appeal of a Marshmello song is if there's no drop, and if the other artist could easily make that same song with any other producer. Kind of the same situation with that Lil Peep/Marshmello collab. And this ain't great. Main melody is so tinny and weak, the chorus is obnoxious with those "day-ay-ay-ay" bits. It's just kinda depressing to listen to. Even when Logic starts rapping faster before the final chorus. It would be impressive if it wasn't just saying nothing. I used to root for this guy too...

9. Broken Clocks

I've been apathetic about SZA's singles so far. I never thought I'd come across one that I just flat out hate. The trap percussion here feels particularly irritating for some reason. The synths are a tuneless slurry and it's just overall depressing. And again, SZA herself is fine. But she doesn't make this not a chore to listen through. Yeah, I'm still not listening to Ctrl any time soon, I'm sorry. I just don't get it.

10. Stranger Things

This. Hurts. Joyner Lucas seemed to be a bubbling artist with a lot of promise, thanks to I'm Not Racist (shut up it showed promise), and his remixes. But with every artist he endorsed on Twitter, more and more red flags came up. Right until his first charting song was with Chris Brown. The rapping from Joyner is fine. Not saying a lot but it's technically impressive. But Chris is unlikeable as usual, and the beat is just skincrawling. And it gets worse toward the end where they sing with autotune. Joyner, it's not too late to redeem yourself. Please, do the right thing.

11. Sad!

It's sad we're still giving this guy hits. This cluttered mess of percussion and bad singing doesn't really convey sadness to me. Or suicide. Or regret. It's just confused, with X continuing to try to make you feel sorry for him even though HE BEAT UP HIS PREGNANT GIRLFRIEND. Stop doing that. The sooner everyone sees through your crap, the better.

12. X

That is NOT the main synth melody. Jesus Christ, that's just piercing and awful. And that's the only interesting thing about this slice of generic Latin. The percussion is weak, Neither performer is particularly good. This got 150 million views in less than two weeks. That's not something to be proud of.

12. Changes

YOU ASSAULTED THIS GIRL YOU DON'T GET TO SAY SHIT LIKE THIS AAAAAAAAAAAAAA. God, this is bad. X badly sings over this barebones, uninteresting piano melody about HE feels he can't stand being with this girl because of the way she's changing. GO TO HELL.

  1. I don't know why I like "Changes" so much. I really shouldn't.

  2. If the main synth melody in X is bad, then why did you praise Mi Gente for it's main synth sounding like a goat dying in that song? I mean the melody is bad on both songs imo, so there's that, but I think Mi Gente's might be slightly worse.

    1. I actually didn't like Mi Gente the first few times I heard it but it grew on me. And I don't find it as irritating because it's much quieter and more professional sounding. X's synth is high pitched and loud.
