New and Returning Entries Ranked

1. Woman

Praying was the triumphant return. Woman is an assertion of dominance. I dig this a lot. Smooth, jazzy, intense, and incredibly catchy. This sort of retro throwback jazz is the sort of stuff I live for. Kesha's performance is also on point, delivering some absolute fire. Even in the second verse where she can't stop laughing. That's just awesome. I liked Praying and all; this is miles better. Please be bigger.

2. It Ain't My Fault

Oh thank god this is back. We need this to be bigger, best country song currently charting. Dangerous, fun, and self-indulgent.

3. Rollin

We may have lost Slide this week, but at least we got this back for now. If this could somehow be a hit I would love that.

4. Whatever You Need

I was just thinking about this song last night, huh. Underrated as hell. Whimsical, ear wormy sample with some actually smooth performances from Chris and Ty Dolla $ign. I've even gotten used to Meek's shouting this time around.

5. Young Dumb & Broke

I listened to American Teen a few weeks ago and it was pretty chill. If a bit long. I'm glad this was chosen as the next single from this album. It's smooth and moody, even with the warbling on the chorus. Plus, Khalid's talking about a relationship with uncertainties, mostly with finances. But he remains optimistic despite that. I like it. Can't decide whether I prefer this or Location though.

6. Down

Still not big on it. A bit thin for my tastes with nothing really standing out. Plus Gucci Mane's verse is not all that impressive. But, it is tolerable. And considering Fifth Harmony's previous big hits, that's a step up in my book.

7. Subeme La Radio

Isn't this the fourth time this recharted? Still ignoring this.

8. A Lie

This is a mess. I think the main melody is supposed to be this electric flute thing in the background. It sounds like something that was recorded on GarageBand. The mixing is also just...bad. It's incredibly off-putting and isn't as catchy as it thinks it is. Also repeating "a lie" over and over again sounds awkward. Plus, The Weeknd steals the show, with his bits taking up nearly the first two minutes of the song. Not good form, French Montana.

9. El Amante

No.

10. No Complaints

We're so close to having no Drake on the Hot 100 for the first time since 2009 and then this happens. And yep, this is still terrible. Sludgy and derivative. But since it only returned at 100, it'll likely be gone by next week anyway.

11. Jerika

I really, really want to ignore Jake Paul. But evidently I can't. Especially now that he managed to somehow chart another song on the Hot 100. And it's a love song. A ship name specifically. The guitars are okay, but everything is drowned in reverb and autotune. Erika's vocals around the 3 minute mark are especially egregious. Plus Uncle Kade really shouldn't be here. Lyrically, I can only remember a name-check for Quavo and Future's Mask Off. This just makes me feel sick.

  1. 7 and 9: Ha shots fired. Also, is it just me or is Subeme La Radio spelled incorrectly? It should be either Subeme La Radia or Subeme Lo Radio. I don't know, maybe it's just the inner 2 years of high school Spanish in me that's saying this is wrong.

    1. First off, I think it would be el not lo. And I know occasionally words in Spanish don't go "a" with la and "o"with el. So I guess that fits that, but I don't know honestly. Although I doubt the artist would screw up the title.

    2. Looks like radio is a feminine noun if referred to as a medium, but masculine if referring to the actual device. Either would probably work fine in the context of the song, though "la" is admittedly catchier and fits a little better than "lo" or "el" here.

  2. So apparently, the charts are delayed because of a "technical error", by that me and others on Pulse think it's a battle between Lana, Tyler and Meek. This is the second time charts were delayed due to Lana, remember High By The Beach?
