New and Returning Entries Ranked

1. Humble.

The big one. Kendrick's first Top 10 hit as a lead artist. And yeah, it's deserved the acclaim it's already gotten. Mike Will Made It managed to make a trap beat actually intense. That is a miracle. And Kendrick himself is a presence to behold. Looking forward to that album on Friday.

2. Human

Oh hey, it's another song whose controversy became a meme amongst my friends a while ago. Now that I've finally heard this for myself, I love this. It's rough and rugged. Rag'n'Bone himself has a sweet, rugged voice that's close to Hozier while still keeping its own identity. The production is subtle and haunting during the verses and explosive on the chorus. Yep, no apologies.

3. Everybody

Woo! Yeah, I appreciate Logic's return. Though I kinda thought this guy was white. Apparently he's biracial, which is why I guess his use of the n-word in the second verse is okay. And he talks at length about race politics in this song. Beat's great. Yep, I like this.

4. Heatstroke

A strange combination of artists, but it turns out for the best. Young Thug is the obvious star of the show. He works best against real upbeat, fun tropical production like this. But Pharrell and Ariana are a nice touch too. It's all very breezy and happy. Slide is better, but I'll still take this.

5. The One

Comments on this song withheld until I talk about it in my upcoming video retrospective. For now, I'll just say I like it quite a bit.

6. You Look Good

This is more akin to blues rock than it is to country in my eyes. Still, it's good blues rock. Tight groove and interplay between the vocalists. Good to see these guys charting again after all these years.

7. First Day Out

As the title would suggest, it's a rap song about getting out of prison and going back to business as usual. And I like it. The beat is menacing and it builds throughout the song, much like Tee Grizzley's intensity. It has no chorus, with all the focus going on the lyrics. It's pretty standard stuff for this kind of song, but it works. No gimmicks, just bars.

8. Goosebumps

See what happens when you hold off on releasing a video, Travis? Or maybe this was a really clever way of extending its chart life? I don't know. At least it's back and finally has a video. That's not on his official YouTube. What the hell?

9. How Not To

Sweet pop country ballad about a breakup. It's not bitter, it's produced well, and it's sung well. Don't know if I have much to add to that, it's just a good pop country song. Weird that it comes with a video about alcoholism though.

10. Subeme La Radio

"Bring me the radio". That seems like a weird sentence to me. I've heard "turn on" or "turn up", but bring it? Not as catchy. As for the song itself, it's alright. It's catchy and sounds good. Hopefully the lyrics aren't bad. But I accept that they very well could be.

11. God, Your Mama, And Me

This may have grown on me since last time. Still just okay. I appreciate the sentiment, but I'm not a fan of the autotune or how Backstreet Boys are underused. If you're gonna use an unconventional guest artist, you better actually use them.

12. Tin Man

Very low tempo country. On a technical level it's very good. Maybe I'm just not in the mood for this right now. Or maybe it's not really that special. Either way, I want to like this more than I do.

13. Drowning

It's okay. The beat is actually enjoyable with the menacing pianos. But the content really isn't anything to write home about. I'm not sure why you would bring up a "drowning" metaphor if you're gonna spend the song bragging. Also I feel like Kodak Black shouldn't be on this song. He's too nasally to fit the instrumentation. Boogie's fine though.

14. Craving You

I feel like I should like this at least on an instrumental level but I don't. Something about Thomas Rhett's smarmy attitude gets to me here. But what else is new? Not to mention the way it relegates Maren Morris to being a background vocalist. C'mon, she's worth her own verse, Rhett. Also it's not cou--

15. Conscience

YOU HAVE NO CONSCIENCE BECAUSE YOU'RE A RAPIST! ... Sorry. Yeah that has nothing to do with this song. It's just mediocre. The production does have some life but it's also incredibly cluttered for some reason. Future and Kodak seem buried in the mix and it's off-putting. And of course it's nothing of substance. As one would expect.
