New and Returning Entries Ranked

1. Galway Girl

The fan favorite on the album, and with good reason. It's upbeat, tight, and dripping in Irish everything. That's the best way to describe it: Irish everything. I would very much love for this to be the next single. The potential music video would be so fun.

2. New Man

Ed's ex calls Ed to cheat on her current partner. This could've turned out really badly, but the framing helps keep it from being morally ambiguous. Mostly because Ed makes it clear he doesn't want to muck up their relationship. Though he knows there's something wrong with it. Also the beat reminds me a lot of Don't, so that helps.

3. Supermarket Flowers

I forgot how good this song is. It ends the standard edition, and the lyrics are dedicated to Ed's deceased grandmother. I thought it was a love song at first, but...yeah. I'm getting misty-eyed listening to this. If there's anyone who can wring out genuine sadness, it's Ed Sheeran.

4. Barcelona

The only song from this week I hadn't previously heard because it was a bonus track. I'll be sure to check out the rest of the bonus tracks after this. And yeah, I dig this. It sounds like a Spanish-inspired dance track, with the muted electric guitars and heavy acoustic guitars. Kinda sounds like the acoustic version of itself at times, but I dig it anyway.

5. What Do I Know?

Ed gets on a soapbox. And I don't mind. We really do need love right now. And also government that knows what the hell it's doing, but, you know, love too. I know by that statement it sounds like I'm being sarcastic, but this song's still good. Real chill and charming.

6. Happier

Breakups suck. And I'm sure it hurts to know your ex looks happier with someone else. And though the lyrics are miserable, they never cross into unjustified bitterness. It's real mature, like When I Was Your Man by Bruno Mars. Also the production sounds a lot like Stay With Me by Sam Smith, but Ed's tones make it sound a lot better. So yeah.

7. How Would You Feel (Paean)

Good old fashioned piano/acoustic guitar ballad. Better than "Thinking Out Loud" for being less weird with its lyrics. Yeah I think I already said this when the song originally debuted. Glad to see it back.

8. Eraser

A full-on rap song. I think this is the first time I've heard Ed attempt something like this. Though I haven't heart or yet, so we'll see. It's definitely interesting. Kinda fitting considering the lyrics are about his fame. I was considering this song to be more infamous considering how hated 7 Years was, but eh. Turns out people like it. I don't mind either. It's just one of the weaker tracks to me.

9. Perfect

Wow this blew up on YouTube for some reason. It's a sweet ballad and all, but it's weird that this is the biggest debut of the week. But, I'll take it. It's got a nice swing rhythm and endearing writing. Guess I wouldn't mind it sticking around.

10. Hearts Don't Break Round Here

Another sweet love ballad. Feels grand and sweeping, with some pretty descriptive lyrics, as you would expect from Ed. Having the image of a broken heart seems like a weird thing to base the chorus on though. Even if he explicitly says the opposite will happen.

11. Dive

One of the most hated songs on the album. I'm not really sure why that is. I still like it, but admittedly it's not as interesting as some of the other songs on the album. I don't have much to say. Kinda slow.
