New and Returning Entries Ranked
1. Perfect Illusion
I think Todd in the Shadows said it best. This is a good song, but I wish it stayed as awesome as the intro throughout. Still, it's pretty good. It's got grit and personality that only Lady Gaga could deliver. Bit of a breakup song and bitter at times, but it's serviceable. I hope against all odds it doesn't flop.
2. A Little More Summertime
So apparently NMR has this meme where Jason Aldean is a stupid man. And I can't really argue, even if I usually think he's alright. I wasn't able to find a proper studio recording of this song when it first hit the charts. This time we have a music video. So I can hear this song as intended. And it's decent. Nothing special, but decent-sounding with typical Jason Aldean-isms.
3. Sleep Without You
It be country. Country countrying. Something something. Can't sleep without you. Pleasant enough, decent guitars and Brett Young has a nice voice. But I don't see myself remembering this at all. Maybe I will whenever I watch countdown videos. We'll see.
4. Black Beatles
I don't remember what I said about this song when I covered SremmLife 2, but that instrumental is actually decent. Nice sound and groove with the guitars. But that's all there really is. These lyrics are nothing to write home about. Typical bragging, especially with a verse about haters. Gucci Mane's part feels unnecessary. Not terrible, but nothing special. Still, I didn't give it enough credit when I covered it before.
5. Blue Ain't Your Color
Ugh, fake drums. Blatantly fake. Terrible idea. The rest of the production feels barren and unfulfilling too. It's got a decent rhythm but that's about it. It's also got a really weird sentiment. Blue's not her color? So what? That sounds really jerkish and mean. I thought you were trying to be romantic, Keith. Wait, he's talking about her current boyfriend, isn't he? C'mon...
6. Deja Vu
This sounds an awful lot like lounge music. Maybe it's trying to emulate Hotline Bling? But the mix is so overstuffed that it comes off as overpowering at points. Post Malone and Justin Bieber sound incredibly similar, and neither is charming. It's mostly just boring. Also I'm not sure how wanting each other qualifies as deja vu.
7. X
Mumble rapping, yaaaaaaaay. I had heard about the hype around 21 Savage long before I heard anything from him. I think people were more fascinated with his stage name than anything else, especially because it's close to twenty one pilots. There's no way anything else about this guy could stand out. He sounds bored as hell, the beat is nothing, lyrically it's pretty insufferable, putting an ex on blast for no real reason. Plus Future is on it because of course he is. So bland.
