New and Returning Entries Ranked
1. The Long Way
After Brett's previous single Something I'm Good At failed to chart, I got worried we wouldn't see the guy again. And yet this found a way. This is really sweet. Maybe a little saccharine, but that only makes it more earnest. He sounds genuinely interested in this girl for more than her looks, which is not something I feel like I hear about much in music, even country music. And it sounds pretty beautiful too. Admittedly, this probably isn't gonna be something I constantly return to, but it does make me feel better that this is getting airplay.
2. Pray For Me
The first couple times I heard this, I was put off by that plinking sound that plays throughout the verses. Especially with how it goes down a half step at the end of each phrase. But with repeat listens I think I've gotten used to it. I dig this dark, kinda creepy production that suits The Weeknd and Kendrick well. Meets together in the middle, as it were. Though it's not Kendrick's best. The Weeknd of course steals the show here because he's on more of this. But even more than that, this beat is great. I mean, overall, I guess it's not that special, and it's not as good as Sidewalks. But it is the best Black Panther song I've heard. Who knows if it'll be able to sustain a debut this high though.
3. Whatever It Takes
Weird that this is finally seeing a comeback on the Hot 100. It's been a single for a few months and the video came out in October. But it did just recently have an iTunes discount and is picking up on alternative radio. Eh. Better late than never. I would consider this my least favorite of the singles on Evolve, but I also see it being the most agreeable in my circle. It's nice and uplifting, Dan's fast flows on the verses are fun, and it's pretty anthemic. But I don't see this getting big. I did say the same thing about Believer and Thunder, but still.
4. Dura
"Hard." Ohhhhhhh noooooooo. Actually I think he's talking about his life. Maybe in a tongue and cheek way considering how upbeat and fun this is? I'm gonna go with that until someone tells me otherwise. Yeah, this is bright and colorful, and Daddy Yankee's really enjoyable on this. Seems this guy got a lot more likable after Despacito. And yeah, this is one of the better Spanish language songs currently charting.
5. Man of the Woods
This album is not ceasing to be weird, is it? Like, it's a blending of doo-wap and some country elements and I'd argue it doesn't really blend together very well. So it's pretty jarring as it is. But... I guess there's a bit of Justin's charisma that comes through. Gotta give him that at least. And it's kinda funny, I guess, just for how much this doesn't work. And like with Supplies, the bridge is actually pretty good. So again, it has that. Maybe I need to check out this album.
6. Hardaway
Your typical rap song about struggles on the streets. Selling drugs to make ends meet, that kind of thing. Eh. It's not bad. This Derez De'Shon guy sounds appropriately pained for a song like this, but at least at the moment doesn't do a lot to stand out. Kind of the same with this song. Kinda blandly decent in a way. It sounds decent, which is more than I can usually say for these viral Worldstar Hip Hop songs. So yeah. It's alright. But I probably won't remember it.
7. The Champion
Back because of the Super Bowl. Though I have a feeling this has already faded out of public conscience since then. Can't blame them. Again, not a bad song, but it's a bit derivative.
?. Supplies
You know it's bad when the album's release can only bring this back at 100. This is still just as ugly and directionless as I remember it. Glad he didn't perform this at the Super Bowl. Bridge is still good though.
8. At The Club
So uh...this song already feels out of date. I can't remember the last time a song explicitly took place at the club. Let alone a "love in the club" song. It's...fine. I guess. Honestly this is pretty boring. Short too. I guess Dej is fine here. Definitely more charismatic than Jacquees. Plus this isn't nearly as bad as B.E.D, but it's played out. It's an overdone topic with nothing new or interesting to make me care.
9. A Girl Like You
Oh yay another bro country song about being in love with a girl. Well, it's not as bad as Small Town Boy, I'll give it that. The instruments do have some meat and Easton Corbin's not a bad singer. But it still has some pretty sleazy undertones, especially with that first verse reading like a checklist of bro country stereotypes. And ultimately it doesn't feel as romantic as Easton Corbin wants it to be. Could do worse for bro country I guess, but I have no use for this.
10. Criminal
What happened this past week that Ozuna is seeing this much popularity in America? Not only did this return, but the godawful El Farsante was the biggest gainer of the week. And yet El Modelo actually fell, and this returned. This is still just boring with some truly annoying melodies. But after El Farsante, anything's an improvement. Let's just hope this isn't permanent.
11. Rock
A couple weeks ago I predicted this would be big. I don't have that delusion anymore, since it's back at the exact same spot it originally debuted. Yeah, we're dodging a bullet there. Still bad. But, kinda sweet, I guess.
12. Singles You Up
Oh my god it's a country Treat You Better. Ugh. Yeah, Jordan Davis is being much more honest and upfront about his intentions, and it focuses a little more on why the guy's bad for her, but damn this is just sleazy and gross all the same. Not helped by the swampy instrumentation that just leaves me feeling gross all over. No. No no no no no. When PLIES has more class than you, stop.
You have Walk It Talk It falling out of the top 20 at #28, the same as TGAG.
ReplyDeleteHot take: Walking The Wire would have been a better single than Whatever It Takes.
Also, I actually prefer Supplies over Filthy, I actually like it tbh.
