New Entries Ranked

1. Say Something

It took three singles from this album, but Justin finally came out with something that's actually pretty good. It's low key but it does a pretty good job at combining some of Justin's pop tropes with more organic, country-leaning production. And the addition of Chris Stapleton is the icing on the cake. So really, it feels good to listen to this. Maybe a good indication of what Justin was going for on this album but reportedly didn't achieve. And if this helps Stapleton get the respect in the mainstream he deserves as this becomes a hit, that's win win in my book.

2. BBO (Bad Bitches Only)

How is the song with 21 Savage one of the more energetic songs on this? But yeah, I like the horn sample this uses. It's lively and colorful and can almost distract me from the fact that 21 Savage is passing around girls after nailing them, which is just...wrong. But, surprisingly 21's chorus is actually good for once. Probably because he sounds like he's imitating Takeoff at points. And the Migos are fine enough. This is kind of a dumb song, but it's also a lot of fun, so, yeah. Not gonna complain.

3. Narcos

Well, this is probably the weakest guitar on the Hot 100 since Bank Account. I don't really see the need to shove it to the back of the mix. Other than that, this just sounds incomplete. It does have a surprisingly good groove, though. But it does feel like there are missing instruments on this somewhere, or at the very least the instruments that weren't there were mixed poorly. Still head and shoulders above a lot of the rest though...

4. Gang Gang

Is Takeoff trying to seduce me with this hook? That's...a little weird. But I won't deny that his cadence isn't that bad. The beat's also decent too. It's minimal, but it's a catchy, bassy, almost sensual melody. This ain't bad. Even though it's supposed to be repping a gang. A...gang gang? At least it's not a Gucci Gang remix. What this tells me is that Takeoff should take the lead on Migos songs more often.

5. Supastars

Sometimes the way to my heart is making your song sound like an arcade game. Prime example, this. Okay, you don't get to my heart, but it's kinda going in the right direction. I kinda like those twinkling synths, but other than that I find myself tuning out while I listen to this. But that might be because I've been putting myself through a marathon of this album. It's not bad; it's got some groove, but it's not special or all that memorable.

6. Most People Are Good

Well I believe most people aren't Luke Bryan fans. Okay, that was mean, sorry. This is...eh. I can appreciate what Luke's going for, but the lyrics are pretty much all sweet nothings. They don't really invoke much thought or take much thought to think anyway. Plus that line about Friday nights with neon or stadium lights feels out of place. Like, "people are good, and so is football." It's pretty bland. Like most Luke Bryan songs that don't just rip off Country Girl.

7. The Middle

Oh, this is disheartening. Not that Maren Morris is doing a song that's blatantly pop and not the slightest bit country. I'm honestly not surprised given how songs like 80 Mercedes almost completely abandon country. But taking the place of Hailee Steinfeld for what's essentially a retread of Starving isn't a good fit for her. It basically just makes her another Bebe Rexha. Granted this is better than Starving, for Maren being a better singer, and the drop not being as skin-crawling. Still, this doesn't do anything for me. Also was this just an elaborate advertisement for Target? I'm gonna say yes.

8. New Freezer

I wasn't looking forward to this. Despite the Kendrick feature. The beat's pretty derivative, Rich The Kid seems to depend on the beat too much for this song to exist, with him just blatantly not rapping at points in his verse. Plus, the hook feels very stilted, feeling more like it should be a verse instead of a hook. Kendrick does redeem this a little bit when he's on, but he fumbles toward the end when it sounds like he doesn't know what flow he's supposed to be using to match the beat. And when a song like this is better than most of the Migos songs that debuted this week...ho boy.

9. Auto Pilot

This is apparently one of the tracks on this album Quavo had a hand in producing, especially indicated by the subtitle "Huncho On The Beat". The melody to this is slightly Oriental flavored I think, but it's also paper thin. So any bumpability relies on the more aggressive synths, but they're not allowed to let loose like they should. Not to mention how much of the T-Shirt flow comes in on the chorus. Takeoff and Offset are okay I guess.

10. CC

I'm getting Huncho Jack flashbacks. Quavo's autotune is pretty egregious on this. Plus the beat is by the numbers, coasting off dreamy synths and strings that aren't interesting on their own. It's telling when Gucci Mane is actually a relief because he's not abusing autotune. At one point it almost sounded like Offset said something transphobic, but he really said "she in heat." Takeoff sounds bored.

11. You Make It Easy

I'm getting serious Blue Ain't Your Color vibes listening to this. And that's not a good thing. This tries to be romantic but it feels so jittery and muddy that it doesn't register that way. It's just kinda creepy. Plus some of the writing feels kinda condescending. "You make it easy to love you." That sounds like an insult.

12. Walk It Talk It

Of course the highest debuting Migos song this week also involves Drake. There's still no number 1, by the way. The repetitive chorus seems to try to call back to the old Migos, but without the bombast that could be a potential saving grace of that era. The beat is barebones, basically just some wine glasses. But I guess it's just the perfect thing for Drake to use. I'm so sick of him just phoning things in, especially here. He's far past the point where he cares about his career.

13. White Sand

There's something about Travis Scott that brings out the worst in Migos, or Quavo specifically. Wow, the autotune here is just bad. But that's what happens when you bring on two of the biggest autotune addicts in rap. The beats kinda irritating, Big Sean doesn't belong here at all. Ty Dolla $ign is kinda forgettable on this. Offset and Takeoff come up on top, no surprise. But overall, this is just a mechanical mess. Also how is this 3 and a half minutes if there are six performers on it?

14. Higher We Go (Intro)

So the first sound you hear on this album is Quavo's autotune. Bad first impression. His cadence on the chorus is just awkward and clashes with the beat. But then again, that doesn't have much going on either, made of some bells and barely audible strings, plus some guitar on Offset's verse. It's less intimidating than it thinks. I'm reminded of how much more energetic and fun the opening track on the original Culture was. This sounds like no one actually wants to do this. And I don't blame them.

15. Emoji A Chain

Oh god this is a real title. But I'm not sure it's a real song. Metro Boomin brings one of his laziest beats to date that consists of a drab ascending 3 note melody that doesn't evolve. Just on occasion a synth with slightly more grit. Until the end where an electric guitar is added, which is so jarring and out of place yet lacks any real presence. And the Migos themselves are really going with emoji related content, huh? Alongside their typical gangster lyrics? Yeah, alright. not to mention the weird reference to McFlurries on the hook. This is just confusing and boring.

16. El Farsante

"The Pretender". Oh good, more Spanish trap. I should probably stop complaining about the typical Latin percussion pattern if this is what we get in its place. This is grating, with Ozuna giving his worst performance I've heard from him yet. It's scratchy, and combined with the tense, plinking beat, I'm just left irritated. And yet, I don't think I'll remember this. I don't even wanna know what the remix with Romeo Santos sounds like.

17. Notice Me

Oh my god. The other songs from Culture II were boring too, but at least they were trying to be lively to some degree. This beat straight up barely exists. There's nothing going on aside for some harsh bass that starts with Offset's verse. Post Malone sounds bored out of his mind, which also makes me feel bored. And I have no idea what it's supposed to be going for, or why it exists. Is it sad? Vibey? I'd argue neither, because this isn't relaxing or melancholic. It's just violently boring. Not even Offset and Takeoff rapping fast can help this.
